History

The then Department of Educational Foundations proposed and obtained approval to offer a B. Ed. in Primary Education Studies in 2006, although the programme’s implementation began in 2009. That same year, when nine undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the social sciences and humanities were merged from the Departments of Educational Foundations, Curriculum Studies, and Educational Technology, the B. Ed. Primary Education Studies programme was housed in the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education. In August 2013, it was again relocated to the newly formed Department of Arts Education, which had split from the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education. The first set of two students was admitted in 2009 and graduated under the former Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education.

In the beginning of 2014/2015 session, the Department of Adult and Primary Education was created to award Bachelor’s degrees in two programmes: Adult Education Studies and Primary Education Studies.  With the creation of the Department of Adult and Primary Education in September 2014, the B. Ed. Primary Education Studies programme, which had been running for four academic sessions, became one of the two core academic degrees offered by the new department, alongside the B. Ed. Adult Education Studies. This transition marks the gradual evolution of the B. Ed. Primary Education Studies programme as it moved through various administrative units before being housed in the Department of Adult and Primary Education. Since then, student enrollment has steadily increased each year.

The Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education Studies started with the creation of the Department of Adult and Primary Education in 2014/2015 academic session. Adult Education Studies began with an initial enrollment of 19 students, with the first set graduating in 2017. Since then, student numbers have steadily increased on yearly basis.
